ECDD works to help make community development programs and activities of mainstream development organizations working at community level accessible to persons with disabilities.  This work builds upon the previous ECDD-LFTW Netherlands “Disability Mainstreaming” project and will continue under the ECDD-LFTW SNNPR Regional Disability Mainstreaming Partnership Program, focusing on Disability Inclusion Awareness Training (DIAT) for community workers of partner faith-based and community-based organizations.  ECDD will continue to partner with international development and pastoralist development organizations under the ECDD-USAID PRIME program to promote and facilitate the inclusion of disability issues and persons with disabilities in their ongoing pastoralist livelihood and other programs.

ECDD inclusive community development work with mainstream development organizations in rural communities will target one or more sectors: early childhood development, nutrition, women empowerment, youth programs, water and sanitation, horticulture, income-generation and general community development initiatives.  The goal: to promote and demonstrate how they can address the needs of, and how they can include children, youth and adults with disabilities and their families.

ECDD works to help increase vocational skills training opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities, in both institutional and community-based settings. ECDD will continue to work with the Federal TVET Agency and Regional TVET Agencies on how to implement a policy and practice of disability inclusive TVET. This work will continue under the ECDD-LFTW Netherlands Employable project, the ECDD-Irish Aid Ethiopia project and the ECDD-USAID ISTEP II program, if approved. The work will be expanded in SNNPR Region with the start of the ECDD-LFTW Regional Disability Mainstreaming Partnership Program, and focus on Disability Inclusion Awareness Training (DIAT) and specialized training for personnel of TVET institutions.  In addition, the Partnership Program will support the expansion of community-based vocational skills training activities in the Region.

ECDD also works to increase income generation and employment opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities and their families. The work will continue under the ECDD-Abilis Foundation grant-making project to provide grants to groups of persons with disabilities engaged in income-generating activities. In addition, a new ECDD-CBM project will help organizations engaged in the creation of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to include persons with disabilities, especially women, as VSLA members. ECDD will also provide Basic Business Skills (BBS) and Business Development Skills (BDS) training to members of income-generating groups and VSLAs.  ECDD will also continue to work with selected micro-finance institutions to increase their organizational and staff capacity to provide services to clients with disabilities.

ECDD will continue to provide job-hunting skills training for TVET and university graduates with disabilities, under the ECDD-Threshold Association project and the ECDD-LFTW SNNPR Partnership Program.  Finally, all ECDD projects will seek to place trainees with disabilities as interns in public and private sector companies and organizations, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Business and Disability Network (EBDN).

ECDD works to help make mainstream government and non-governmental health service delivery accessible to persons with disabilities, particularly women and girls with disabilities. This work will continue under the ECDD-Packard Foundation “Inclusive Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services” project in Oromia Region, focusing on both demand side (persons with disabilities) and supply side (accessible services).  ECDD will continue to partner with local FP/RH service-providing organizations to increase their awareness of the need, and how to extend service delivery to persons with disabilities.  ECDD will also promote FP/RH service awareness and use by DPO members, university students with disabilities and other persons with disabilities.

The work will be extended to SNNPR Region with the start of the ECDD-LFTW Regional Disability Mainstreaming Partnership Program, and focus on Disability Inclusion Awareness Training (DIAT) training for government Health Extension Workers at government health posts and clinics, and for personnel of CSOs engaged in community-level health service delivery.

ECDD works to help make primary and secondary schools, both public and private, accessible for children with disabilities.  This work will continue the ECDD-EU “Promoting the Inclusive Education of Children with Disabilities” (PIECD) project.  The work will be extended to SNNPR Region with the start of the ECDD-LFTW Regional Disability Mainstreaming Partnership Program, and focus on Disability Inclusion Awareness Training (DIAT) training for educational authorities and school teachers, on the establishment of Resource Centers (with materials and equipment), and on physical modifications to create model accessible primary and secondary schools. The work also includes establishing or strengthening Centers for Students with Disabilities at universities, both under the continuing ECDD-Threshold Association project and the new LFTW SNNPR Partnership Program.
